The Camino de Santiago is a life-changing experience that attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world every year. Among the many available routes, the French Way and the Northern Way are two of the most popular. But which one is the best option for you?

We thoroughly compare both routes to help you decide which one best suits your expectations, level of preparation, and spiritual or touristic goals.

What is the French Way?

The French Way is the most traditional and well-traveled route of the Camino de Santiago. It starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, and crosses northern Spain all the way to Santiago de Compostela. With over 770 km, it goes through regions such as Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León, and Galicia.

What is the Northern Way?

The Northern Way follows Spain's northern coast, from Irún in the Basque Country to Santiago. With around 825 km, it crosses regions such as Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. It is famous for its stunning coastal views and natural environment.

Which route should you choose based on your profile?

If it’s your first Camino de Santiago

The French Way is the best choice. Its excellent signage and wide range of services make it perfect for beginners. Plus, it’s easier to find help and company.

If you're looking for a spiritual and solitary experience

The Northern Way offers peaceful stretches, introspective landscapes, and a deep connection with nature.

If you value cultural heritage

While both routes feature architectural gems, the French Way includes some of Spain’s most iconic cathedrals, monasteries, and historic cities.

If you want to avoid crowds

The Northern Way, especially outside of peak season, is a great alternative if you prefer walking in silence and avoiding large groups.

Tips to choose your ideal route

Can both routes be combined?

Yes, and it’s a very enriching option. Some pilgrims start on the Northern Way and later join the French Way via the Primitive Way or the Coastal Route to Arzúa.

This allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds: the northern nature and the history and community of the French Way.
