Pilgrimage stages
Almost all the routes have something in common and this makes it possible to alternate, which means that that two or three simple stages might be followed by two complicated ones, involving going uphill and downhill, or roads that are difficult to access.
Pilgrims keep in mind the time of year and, therefore, they almost always choose the months of May to September. They thereby avoid the constant, and feared, rainfall and snowfalls that occur during the rest of the year, especially in the final stage within the region of Galicia.
It is also important to consider the hours of maximum sunshine. Therefore, it is not advisable to go on this pilgrimage in July and August, which are the hottest months, since the extreme physical effort involved may lead to dehydration.
Another important aspect of the stages is the recommendation to complete between 60 and 80 kilometres daily, at an average speed of 11 to 13 kilometres per hour. This obviously depends on how fit each person is as well as the different stopovers for resting and getting your strength back.
